Abstract
Background: The Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Registration Project, which has been in operation since 1994, examines the human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-type of donor candidates and enables them to receive timely transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells in the future. It is part of an important national support project that can contribute to the improvement of cancer treatment rates.

Method: For donors recruited by the Korea Marrow Donor Program (KMDP) and Catholic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank (CHSCB), gender and age distribution, and reasons for self-withdrawal were analyzed. From 1996 to 2018, we received information on donor candidates¡¯ gender and donation method from the Korea Marrow Donor Program (KMDP) and the Catholic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank (CHSCB).

Results: By 2018, 6,481 patients (male 5,001 and female 1,478) received transplant of bone marrow (1,236 cases) and peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cells (5,240 cases) from unrelated donors through the hematopoietic stem cell donor registration project. This included 52 cases of a donation from Korea to foreign countries. The number of consents compared to the number of consultation, or consent rate, was 54.19%. According to statistics from the KONOS, 353,978 donor candidates were registered by 2018, and 9,096 were deleted from the registration list due to cancellation or overage, thus 344,878 were effective donor candidates. Among the 9,096 cancellations, 2,392 cases were voluntary (change of mind, health problem, the opposition of family) and 7,520 cases were involuntary (exceeding the age limit, death).

Conclusion: The number of donor candidates has increased every year through the hematopoietic stem cell donor registration project for 24 years, and about 6,481 patients receive benefits annually.
